Personal Counseling/Psychotherapy

Counseling or psychotherapy involves one-on-one discussion of the issues you bring. Together we will identify goals, look at the personal roadblocks to your progress, and develop strategies to overcome them. At times I may use cognitive-behavioral techniques or solution focused techniques in our conversation. This means that I will help you to identify internal scripts or dialogues that shape your behavior or I will help you to identify personal strengths you can use to address the issues. I may also use guided relaxation and visualization techniques that will allow us to explore issues that may be painful or repressed.

Group Support and Counseling

Sometimes it is helpful to meet with others who are experiencing similar issues. You can learn how they have successfully adapted and you can share your successes and set-backs. It may help you to plan for issues you haven’t yet experienced. I will be there to assure that it is a personally and emotionally safe environment that remains relatively positive and beneficial to all group members. I will also contribute information based on my professional experience and training. Groups will form when interest is shown by at least six individuals.

Career counseling

This type of interaction is usually direct and instructive – usually more coaching or education than counseling. I assign a lot of homework that you will need to complete between sessions so that we can make the most of our time together. Much of this can be done by telephone and email. I do prefer that our first session be in-person.
